The Virus-neutralizing Action of Serum from Mice Infected with Poliomyelitis Virus
نویسندگان
چکیده
Evidence is presented that the serum of mice paralyzed with the Lansing strain of poliomyelitis virus possesses the capacity to protect normal mice against the same virus when mixtures of virus and serum are inoculated intracerebrally. The virus-neutralizing action was present mainly in mice paralyzed between the 3rd and 6th days following inoculation and was rarely demonstrable in the serum of mice developing paralysis more than 10 days after inoculation. Serum from non-paralyzed mice had approximately the same neutralizing capacity when obtained during the same period following inoculation in which serum from paralyzed mice showed the greatest effect. Neutralization of the virus was not obtained with serum from normal mice or from mice inoculated with normal nervous tissue. Further investigation of the phenomenon is in progress.

Ohio Strains of a Virus Pathogenic for Infant Mice (coxsackie Group). Simultaneous Occurrence with Poliomyelitis Virus in Patients with "summer Grippe"
Further evidence for the widespread occurrence of Coxsackie or C virus is presented in this paper. This virus is characterized by paralysis and myositis produced in infant mice. An epidemic of mild illnesses diagnosed as "non-paralytic poliomyelitis" and as "summer grippe" occurred during the summer of 1947 in Akron and Cincinnati, Ohio. From the pooled feces of such patients both poliomyelitis...
متن کاملA Specific Complement-fixation Test for Infection with Poliomyelitis Virus
A complement-fixing antigen has been developed, using as source of material CNS tissue from newborn mice infected with the newborn mouse-adapted strain of the Lansing type, MEF1 virus. With this antigen, specific reactions have been obtained with sera from mice, cotton rats, and monkeys immunized with the Lansing-type virus, and from monkeys and chimpanzees convalescent from infection with this...
متن کاملLevels of Homotypic Neutralizing Antibody in Human Poliomyelitis Three Years after Infection
Quantitative neutralization tests in monkeys were carried out on sera obtained from 7 patients, 3 months, and 3 years after an attack of poliomyelitis. The serum specimens were tested against 100 to 1000 PD(50) of the patient's own strain of virus, recovered during the acute phase of the illness; all the strains were Type 1. The 6 patients, aged 6 months to 13 years, who had a paralytic attack ...
متن کاملA Sensitive Neutralization Assay for Influenza C Viruses Based on the Acetylesterase Activity HEF Glycoprotein
Influenza C virus possesses specific neuraminate-O-acetylesterase as a receptor-destroying function. This enzymatic activity of the viral glycoprotein HEF (Hemagglutinin, esterase activity and fusion factor) can be visualized in situ by the use of distinct color substrates. Hereby the localization, as well as the quantity of synthesized HEF protein is detectable. We further developed the estera...
